Career History
2007 - present Brain & Body Centre, University of Nottingham

System Administrator / IT Specialist, responsible for managing and improving the centre's computing infrastructure as well as analysis / development of new systems and providing technical support.

  • Architected hardware and software solutions to manage and distribute the Centre's project data, from initial acquisition to fileserver storage.
  • Managed the Centre's Linux and Apple fileservers and Sun Grid Engine cluster, as well as a population of desktop machines.
  • Managed the Centre's migration to a dedicated network in 2008.
  • Authored a tool to convert MRI images to other formats automatically on receipt.
  • Responsible for technical support to researchers and academic staff.
  • Provided administration for web service (Apache 2) and database (MySQL).

Technical Support analyst, responsible for systems administration / installation and telephone support to the firm's server hosting clients.

1996 - 2001 Morgan Stanley, Canary Wharf, London

Member of the London Unix 'Specialist Support' function, handling projects, providing a specialist administration role for market data delivery to London & Europe and escalated support to less experienced SAs.

  • Managed the deployment of 'Secure Filter', Morgan Stanley's in-house market data delivery system, to London and Europe in 1998.
  • Developed a suite of shell script tools to assist in the management of Morgan Stanley's Unix network
  • Appointed Lead Systems Administrator for London office Equities trade floor and for Morgan Stanley's Frankfurt office.
  • Successfully managed the design and deployment of the Unix technical infrastructure for new premises in Junghofstrasse.
  • Designed the Unix technical environment for new MSDW International Private Client Group offices opened in Germany, Italy and the UK in 2001 in conjunction with colleagues from other disciplines.
  • Provided familiarisation and formal training in Morgan Stanley's Unix environment to colleagues in various areas of the firm, notably Integration Engineering.
1994 - 1996 The Sakura Bank, Broadgate, London

Manager, Dealing Systems Support. Responsible for the provision and maintenance of IT services to the Bank's London Office trading floor.

  • Responsible for managing relationships with suppliers and liaising with external auditors from the Bank of England and other regulatory bodies on behalf of the Bank.
  • Maintained the front-office network of Unix workstations, also providing direct support to trading floor staff.
  • Redesigned, rebuilt and dramatically improved the Unix environment (upgrading Solaris servers, setting up NIS/automounter and establishing acceptable security practices in particular).
1989 - 1994 Rolls-Royce & Associates, Derby

As part of a small team, successfully oversaw the growth of the Unix environment (used for nuclear research and design, reactor simulation, DTP, CAD, Ingres Database) from 20 machines to over 300 SunOS servers and workstations.

  • Promoted to Team Leader, September 1992.
