December 21 2007, 21:11Keep Christ Out Of The Festive Season

In the UK, we live in a post-Christian society. Most educated people understand that belief in the "God" myth is the reserve of the backward-thinking feeble of mind, the brainwashed and the insecure self-loathing.

Christianity is one of the most demeaning, corrosive - and above all, it seems to me - downright foolish of humanity's superstitions - yet sadly, most of us are happy to pay lip-service to this laughable set of fairy stories by referring to the festive season which is almost upon as as "Christmas".

Let's be clear. The true meaning of our winter holiday season has nothing to do with the self-fascinated clown who started a cult two millenia ago. It is essentially a secular celebration, born of a Pagan festival which was cynically hijacked by the early Christian church. Let's reclaim it from the closed-minded and backward, and kick Christ out of the Season of Good Cheer.

Yuletide has a much less ignorant ring to it, don't you think?

December 10 2007, 19:54The Song Remains The Same

I was at Led Zeppelin's last British concert.

I've repeated that minor claim to fame a few times over the last 28 years, but I'm mentioning it for the final time here, because later tonight, it will no longer be true.

Zeppelin's two reunion sets in the '80s - at Live Aid, and for Atlantic Records' 40th Anniversary concert - were sadly shambolic.

Given their extraordinary contribution to the popular music of the last century, and the towering stature of their canon, it's hard to begrudge them their lap of honour. But to be quite honest their time had already passed in 1979, when I was fortunate enough to see them - and anyone attending the 02 Arena tonight who's expecting the fire, grace and drama of their glory days, more than three decades after the pinnacle of their career, is going to be disappointed.
