The jazz trumpeter and broadcaster Humphrey Lyttelton died yesterday, a few weeks short of his 87th birthday.

He presented The Best of Jazz on Radio 2 for 40 years, until last year - and played on Radiohead's Amnesiac album in 2001. However, like many people I'll personally remember him for Radio 4's I'm Sorry, I Haven't A Clue - a long-running and irreverent comedy show conceived as a kind of gentle parody of traditional BBC radio panel games.

I used to listen to it on my FM radio walkman while travelling home to my cosy little corner of South-East London from the City, and later from Canary Wharf - on the train from London Bridge, and on the walk to my flat from East Dulwich railway station.

To me, Humph's death is just another little detail to underline that those days are long gone.

Some readers will remember the panel game Mornington Crescent which was the best-loved feature of the show. I went out with a girl who actually lived there while I lived in London.
